ZED 'THE PRESIDENT'

'HIS EXCELLENCY, The Honourable President' radiates Ol'Skool -- thumbing rhythmic bass beatz on TZ every Weekend, as well as caressing and getting intimate every Monday on 'Monday Love'. Doggedly fixed on his own R&B path, Zed is defiantly old school, hopeless romantic, but thankfully free from pretention. In his time he has pretty much seen it all - night clubs, radio, social scene, etc. If you want to catch the unique ol' skool R&B sound from the comfort of your own home then you can access his broadcast every Monday & Saturday on TZ Radio. He's solid as steel.

RADIO SCHEDULE

Mondays 'Monday Love': 10:00 hrs - 12:00 hrs (GMT)
Saturdays: 'Weekend Grooves': 11:00 hrs - 12:00 hrs (GMT)

Zed 'The President's' Profile

I have been in the music circles since the mid 80s, having shared decks with Zimbabwe's legendary DJs, the late Josh "Papa J" Makawa and The Mighty Emperor Biscuit.

I was part of the popular Harare outfit Zed & Ellington (RIP). We were called De Boyz then, playing the best RnB tracks on vinyl at that time at clubs like Circus, Bretts (now Turtles), etc. We also braced and blessed the spillway joint at the lake with the likes of the late Stan £ Sterling, Jim The Soul Spinner, Dennis Wilson, Tich Mataz, George Munetsi, etc.

The love of everything musical, well at least the '80s and '90s era, brought us where we are today. What could I have done with all this vinyl and these classic R&B tunes that are sliding into extinction? A chance collabo with Itayi Garande took this project off the ground; starting as 30 minute, then hour a day podcasts on the hugely popular news site, Talk Zimbabwe (now The Zimbabwe Guardian), we expanded the project to include top professional DJs who now constitute the TZ Radio family. We concieved the idea to provide a unique nostalgic radio station that can take people down memory lane and help relive the good ol times; Harare nights, Skies days (at Bulawayo Sun and Talk Of The Town), etc.

TZ Radio gave me a chance to reconnect with ol' pals: DJ Mujay 'The Mixmaster', DJ Vybe, Big Daddy, Ellington (in spirit, RIP), Dennis 'Shabba' Wilson, George Munetsi, Kelvin 'Soul Supreme' S, Otis 'The Flow' Fraser, Pee Jay 'The Radio Driver', Simon Sazz, etc and make new friends in the business: Ronnie Cool, Chaka D, DJ Khabo, Mista Cee, Terry Jay, Rumbie Moyo, Brenda... The new cats are awesome and are takin' the game to a whole new level. It also gave me a chance to reach out to new audiences who I never had a chance to play for back home and make use of my huge music collection.

Nothing has been more fulfilling musically than this project.

So there you go.

Music influences: Too many to mention, but all DJs who existed in the 1980-90s and the music that existed then.

Public secret: Uncompromising love for TZ Radio

Unknown stuff: Used to rap in my younger days; was on the CT (Caleb Tondhlana) Rap Show  on Radio 3 with the likes of Felix Nganjo - 'The Happy Smiler'.

Memorable occasion: Presenting a show at the Shabba Ranks concert when he visited Zimbabwe in 1989.

Age: What do you think, I started in this business in the 1980s.

Favorite tracks: On The Beat; Whatcha Gonna Do 'Bout It; The Morning After; Hold U Tight; Love's Comin' At Ya; Let The Beat Hit 'Em; Divine Emotions; well too many to mention. Won't name the artists. That's your homework!
