ZIMBABWE: THEATRE IN THE PARK

Ivorian artist Dobet Gnahore performs at Zimbabwe's Harare International Festival of the Arts in the capital, Harare, on Thursday last week.
AFTER the very successful run of Daves Guzha’s play “The Two Leaders I Know” at HIFA over the past weekend, “The Two Leaders I Know” continues at Theatre in the Park from 14 May 2008 to 24 May 2008. The play will be performed during Theatre in the Park’s new lunchtime slot at 13h00pm and the usual 17h30pm. There will be NO shows at 19h30pm during the winter season.

Daves Guzha’s life and work is informed by the wars, sanctions, food shortages, price controls etc experienced under the rule of the two leaders who have been in power during his lifetime—Ian Douglas Smith and President Robert Gabriel Mugabe.

He tells his story in this one-man stage production that is both sharply satirical and a moving personal evaluation of political consequences. The serious yet hilarious play was sold out for both performances during HIFA on 01 and 03 May 2008, with an over crowded theater venue on May 03.

“Since the play was very well received during HIFA I believe it is important that we continue with the show immediately while everyone is still talking about it and the memory of the play is fresh in peoples minds” said Rooftop Promotions Operations Manager, Mr O’Brian Mudyiwenyama.  As is routine with most Rooftop Promotions Productions, “The Two Leaders I Know” will embark on a National Tour after its Theatre In The Park showing.

The play incorporates dance, poetry and multimedia, and is a definite must see.   In the play Daves also remembers the contribution of his parents to the liberation struggle and to his own personal development.

This personal account of events through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy to the Daves Guzha who recently turned forty years old is an interesting and enlightening history of Zimbabwe. Directed by Cont Mhlanga; Written by Stephen J Chifunyise and Raisedon Baya; Production Advisor - Helge Skoog, Sound and Visuals - Eugene Marillier.

The play opens to the public from 14th to the 24th May 2008. Advance tickets are: ZWD 200 million and 250 million at the gate.

…brilliant concept…events and characters makes it a more rewarding experience — Herald (Wonder Guchu)
